Even mild inflammation at the gumline (gingivitis) will have serious potential consequences for the immediate health of the tooth and in the body beyond the oral cavity.  No gingivitis is normal.  You can spot gingivitis yourself.....instead of a pale pink colour to the gums, mild gingivitis will cause the gum tissue to be a darker pink.  As gingivitis becomes more serious it will cause the gums to be more red in colour, and the gums will become swollen.  Markedly inflammed gums can be a discoloured purple colour in appearance.  All inflammed gums will bleed easily.  This inflammation results when bacteria gather in large numbers at or below the gumline.  The chemicals and agents produced by these bacteria including plaque and tartar are irritating to the gum tissue.  The response is gingivitis.

The only way to effectively deal with bacteria, plaque and tartar is to have your pets teeth professionally cleaned.  This does not entail simply scraping the visible tartar off the surface of the tooth.  The space at and below the gumline has to be meticulously cleaned and polished in order to have all of these agents effectively removed.  If this is not done properly, there is little or no point at simply having the teeth look clean.  Gingivitis will still be present and percipitated by the presence of the "gunk" below the gumline.
So, it is the stuff you can't easily see that is more of a problem than the stuff you can see.

Can you clean your own dog or cats teeth simply by brushing?  Sure; but this is a maintenance issue for teeth that start off clean and have little or no gingivitis present.  Unfortunately it is nearly impossible to reverse the accumulation of tartar under the gumline with simple brushing (or even with the use of Dental Diets).  Once professionally cleaned, you can help to maintain your pets oral health through brushing, use of oral rinses, and use of Dental Diets.

Your dog and cats teeth need care and cleaning just like your own teeth do. If you take care of your pets oral health it is one of the most important things you can do to ensure optimum health for life.
