Deworming our pet companions is necessary for them to live healthy lives. Parasites and worms can live inside your pets and some may even be external. Deworming treatments can be administered through injections, topical creams, liquids, tablets, etc. Our veterinarians will work with you to determine which treatment works best for your individual pet. Puppies and kittens do need to be dewormed every two weeks until the age of three months as they are more susceptible to getting worms. What are signs of worms in pets?
If you notice one or more of the following signs then your pet may have worms:
- Weight loss
- Dull coat
- Vomiting
- Blood in stool (dark purple or bright red)
- Dehydration
- Lethargy
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
What are the types of worms in pets? How are they diagnosed?
There are various types of worms that may find themselves inside your pets, these include hookworm, tapeworm, roundworm, whipworm and heartworm. To diagnose what type of worms your pet companion has our veterinarians look for eggs. The doctors generally examine a stool sample with a microscope looking for eggs. Heartworms are usually detected through blood testing. Many pets show few to no symptoms of heartworm so regular testing is encouraged
How can pets get worms?
Worms and parasites can be passed on between pets. For example, it is possible for felines to get worms from canines. A single bite from an infected mosquito can also be a way for your pet to get worms. Furthermore, humans can get worms from pets. This is why deworming protects not just the cherished animals but also you and other humans in your household.
How can I prevent worms in my pets?
Worms are very common in pets when they are younger. It’s important that kittens and puppies are dewormed routinely. We recommend that they are dewormed at two- four-, six- and eight-weeks-old then again at 12- and 16-weeks-old. Kittens and puppies should also be dewormed at six months and one-year-old mark. In adults, it is recommended that they are dewormed twice a year for life.
