Weight Management Services for Pets

Weight Management Services for Pets

Your pets need to be a certain weight in order to live happy and healthy lives. Weight management is highly dependent on your pet’s nutrition and exercise. It is estimated that over 50% of pets are overweight. Obesity can have great effects on your cherished companion’s overall health. On the other end, your pet can also be underweight. It is important for fur parents to understand the ideal weight for their pet breed and age. At Valley Veterinary Services our veterinarians are ready to answer your questions and concerns and provide specialized nutrition diets for your pets.

What happens when my pet is overweight?

Improper weight management can lead to:

  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Kidney dysfunction
  • High blood pressure
  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Skin disorders
  • Cancer

  • How can I make my overweight pet lose weight?

The key is for pet owners to work with their veterinarian and animal care team. Our veterinarians will assist you with making your pet’s life comfortable and formulating a weight loss plan specifically designed for your pet’s unique situation. Treatment for overweight includes

  • Dieting – Your veterinarian will recommend a diet for your pet.
  • Exercise – In order to burn fat your pet activity level will greatly impact how much weight they lose
  • Scheduled meal times – This will prevent pets from overeating and get them accustomed to eating at specific times

  • What Should I feed my Pet?

In order to give your pet longevity they need to maintain a healthy and balanced nutrition. As fur parents you are responsible for the amount of calories your pet takes. It is recommended that your pet’s food is high in nutrients, high in fibre, low in fat, high protein and includes antioxidants. A combination of these can help your pet get to a healthy weight and become more active.
